Appledore is a small fishing village with a long history of sea-farers and shipbuilding.

Shipbuilding is still carried out today in Appledore Shipyards, a large indoor shipyard now privately owned.

The village, stretched along the river, is small with attractive walks along the quay and towards Bideford or Westward Ho! using the footpaths. The quay is actively used by boat owners. It's situation, close to a bar in the river means the Lifeboat is one of the busiest in the country

Car Parking is available in Pay Car Parks, although these get busy in Summer.
Good pub food and restaurants in the village.

APPLEDORE BOOK FESTIVAL

Every year from the last Saturday in September to the first Sunday in October the picturesque fishing village of Appledore in North Devon is the venue for Britain’s most exciting book festival.  Big-name authors and nationally known speakers give talks and there are shows and performances for all ages.  Each year the festival gets bigger and this year it will feature over 70 events.  The festival is unusual in its commitment to innovation, and because it is sustained almost entirely by volunteers based in the community.  Every year there is a publicity event in the early summer to launch the brochure.  In 2009 the recreation of the Great Panjandrum a top secret weapon of 1944 received world-wide publicity.
