The Slade Valley is a beautiful area on the west side of the Cairn nature reserve. Both being easily accessible via the Tarka Trail which runs along the old railway line. On the left of the old track is the Cairn and on the right Slade valley and passing Slade reservoirs. This is a very picturesque walk/cycle and relatively easy for the disabled.

Within the valley there is a very lively community but few fascilities.

One of the BBC's 'Challenge Anneka' 1992 programs involved moving a disused library in Ilfracombe, Devon to the Slade Valley, two miles away where it was made into a much needed community centre.
