view from Trimstone Manor

Other than Trimstone Manor which is a delighful hotel set in a very rural area, there is little to see in Trimstone except the countryside but that countryside is well worth taking a look at.

We are keen to inform you of events, entertainment evenings, and special savings and promotions which we think might interest you.

We do not inundate patrons with information.  Your details will be shared with my Financial Advisory firm Philip J Milton & Company Plc but with no other organisation but please do mention us to friends and family.

If you would prefer not to receive our emails informing you of any possible special offers and free gifts for you and events we may be holding here, please click on the 'delete' button below.  We don't want to upset anyone who would prefer not to hear from us!

We may well host a Patrons’ evening soon as a thank you and to share samples of our wares. Often we have provided special discounts and vouchers for which you can now receive early notification.

A bit about us

Set in 44 acres of landscaped gardens and beautiful North Devon countryside, we are located within minutes of secluded coves and many fine sandy beaches, such as Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton, yet so accessible to the A361, too.  We are also within easy reach of Ilfracombe, Exmoor and the famous North Devon coastal path offering spectacular views.

Many of the local beaches are popular for surfing and wind-surfing and lessons are available for those who are new to the sport. Nearby you may like to try your hand at fishing either on local well stocked lakes or maybe take a boat trip sea fishing from Ilfracombe Harbour . For families, there are many attractions nearby including The Milky Way Adventure Park, Watermouth Castle theme park and Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park to name a few. National Trust properties, gardens and many walking and cycling opportunities are all situated within easy reach of the Hotel.

Our “Tyme Restaurant” (which is also open to non-residents) is open all year for Sunday lunches and week-day bar snacks, cream teas, private parties and weddings. Our varied menu takes inspiration from the amazing scenery and surroundings of North Devon.  With a fantastic range of food producers and suppliers on our doorstep, we seek to incorporate the very best meat, fish and vegetables into our own take on both traditional and modern cuisine, which is fresh, seasonal and local.

In addition to the Lounge Bar and Tyme Restaurant, the Hotel boasts wonderful facilities including en-suite bedrooms and suites, a courtyard and extensive gardens where you can relax with a glass of wine. This, coupled with an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna and games room for residents means that Trimstone Manor Country House Hotel has everything you need to relax and enjoy your stay.

The Hotel also incorporates several self-catering cottages. Each Cottage is fully furnished to a good standard and offers a variety of sleeping arrangements to suit most needs, accommodating from two to nine people.  Pets are welcome in the Cottages and we have Hotel rooms reserved specifically for guests who wish to bring their dog.  Guests staying in the cottages are also most welcome to use the Hotel bar and Restaurant and enjoy special terms for breakfast and evening meals.

We are able to cater for larger functions, including weddings. We hold a license to hold wedding ceremonies and our grounds are also licensed for entertainment. So, whether you want a formal a la carte meal in our Restaurant or a marquee with a more relaxed atmosphere, we can help design a day tailored to suit you.

We plan to develop what we do to include functions in the grounds, possible art exhibitions, conferences and workshops, music festivals, special meals, events and other fund-raising activities like our previous Grand Charity Day, poignant Gaza/Shelterbox appeal evening and the most successful Hospice Big Breakfast where generous friends helped us to raise almost £1000!  Meantime, the Restaurant, gardens, grounds and rare breed poultry are open to all visitors and we serve light lunches, cream teas, ice-creams....... as well as our renowned Sunday lunches of course, where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks on the lawn or in the courtyard with the relaxing, trickling Copenhagen mermaid fountain in the background.

Weekend packages for exclusive use of the Hotel and cottages are available. We also have special offers for Shooters and Golfers and occasional general special breaks.

If you have any queries, please do raise them. Please check, where there is a gallery too.  We look forward to seeing you!

My very best wishes. Philip Milton (Owner)

19/12/13 NM Exeter "Brilliant, peaceful, out of the way but convenient to Woolacombe,
country hotel. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. I stayed the night on a surfing
trip and they didn't bat an eye when I checked in still wearing my wetsuit. I was the only one
staying in the manor on that evening but their service was still top notch. They were very
understanding when I locked myself out of my room straight away. Their advice on local
places to eat was also very helpful and helped me find an excellent restaurant with great live
music. In general the room felt like more of a manor and less of a hotel. The furnishings were
rich older antiques and the common areas were artfully decorated without an impression of
tackiness. One of the few places I have stayed recently where I actually want to return and
enjoy more of the facilities/grounds in the near future. Regarding value for money, I was
travelling out of season so the room was heavily discounted. Excellent winter get away!"
10/12/13 Mr&Mrs L "Super Stay again!"
2/12/13 DS "Our second visit in 3 years, this is a lovely quiet location down a small lane
which has infrequent traffic. Its location is ideal for access to the local beaches Putsborough,
Woolacombe, Croyde... The Country Manor hotel is set in picturesque open grounds, the
owners keep a range of ducks, geese and chickens and we would often wander into the field
to see them.
On the first night we stayed in a large family room in the hotel which had original beams and
plenty of character which was both very comfortable and clean and had a filling delicious
Full English breakfast in the morning.
The rest of our week's stay was in a Self Catering Mill Cottage in a courtyard which has 3
bedrooms 1 bedroom at ground floor and the other rooms and a lounge/kitchen upstairs.
There was always parking spaces outside available. They have standard furnishings and
fixings which is ideal for a self catering type holiday. It was clean and everything worked as
it should and in the kitchen there was a washing machine, dishwasher and plenty of plates,
pans and cutlery. These are quirky Solid stone cottages dating back hundreds of years and
have character.
There is a games room with a pool table, darts board and table tennis which we used
frequently on inclement days.
We also had the benefit of the use of indoor swimming pool and gym in the courtyard, many
times we were the only ones in there, inside this building is the original waterwheel and other
relics from the mill.
All the staff and the owner were extremely friendly and helpful in recommending places to
Would stay there again."
27/11/13 Mr&Mrs L "Excellent dinner and company"
21/11/13 Mrs GG "Have been meaning to email you for ages now to thank you for our lovely
stay last month. We are already discussing our 2014 plans and hope to come up for a couple
of nights over the Easter break..."
8/11/13 Mr&Mrs W "Wonderful tea and scones"
7/11/13 DGT "We have an American family staying with us this week, returning home
tomorrow. During their time here, they expressed a desire to have a cream tea, and it was our
intention to take them to the Great British Tea Shop today. Unfortunately, on getting there,
we found it closed, a little surprising, since it was open yesterday. Whilst there are other
places in town doing cream teas, none that are currently open are particularly exciting, and
we were stumped until I thought of Trimstone. We phoned to enquire if they could
accommodate us and was assured they could, and I am pleased to report that your young lady
rose to the occasion, to the extent that our guests ate far more than they should, and, indeed,
far more than was sensible, especially as we are taking them to 71 this evening! Please pass
on my thanks."
6/11/13 Mr&Mrs L "Outstanding stay! Excellent grub!!"
5/11/13 Mrs C B "We had a wonderful time at Trimstone yet again. Thank you for your
wonderful, caring service."
2/11/13 RP&B Braunton "Hi Philip, just wanted to thank you and Helen for a lovely evening
on Thursday, we thoroughly enjoyed it! Many thanks"
1/11/13 DG&KT Ilfracombe "K and I very much enjoyed the wine tasting last night. Charles
plainly has the gift of the gab, but equally knows what he is talking about. I like tastings like
this as they force me to try wines I would otherwise ignore. I intend to try and use him to
supply wine for my next garden party. I also enjoyed the accompanying meal - well chosen
and well executed. I look forward to your next venture. Regards, D"
1/11/13 JB Georgeham "Just wanted to say what a great evening I had last night. Good
company, lovely food - and the wine tasting was real fun and actually very informative.
Thank you Philip. A lovely evening for me. X"
1/11/13 S&EM High Bickington "We had a really nice evening, thank you! It was very
enjoyable and informative and Charles definitely knew his wines............I shall know not to
drink red wine with an impending low pressure weather system on its way. Thank you to
everyone at @TrimstoneManor for a lovely wine tasting evening. Food, service & the wine
were all top class! #Ndevon"
29/10/14 WL Ilfracombe "“A good time had by one and all.” I hope that this type of event
will be available again. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the wines available were very
palatable. I'd go to another event like this." (Wine tasting)
27/10/13 Mr&Mrs O "Lovely stay, very peaceful, great breakfast."
25/10/13 J & L "Very nice, friendly, good food."
17/10/13 Ms W "Just right, Liz x"

A Unique Accommodation Option in North Devon – Fawlty Towers here we come?

The holiday trade is a seasonal one for the vast majority of hotels in North Devon . For the businesses which want to offer all-year-round facilities for visitors and indeed a good quality non-resident restaurant for locals to enjoy, retaining staff out of season can be a totally unaffordable thing, which is why many close-down altogether and restart the programme every Spring.

Trimstone Manor Country House Hotel is wondering about some of the alternatives and whilst the bumbling image of ‘Fawlty Towers’ is not one it wishes to emulate, one thing that Hotel offered and which could resonate with a new clientele for itself, is to consider offering accommodation to permanent guests. It could be the retired Major, the two sisters, the artist, writer, headmaster, retired civil servant......

Trimstone is a beautiful setting in which to live. It is right in the countryside yet at the top of the road, only 300 yards from the Hotel, are very regular buses and Braunton or Ilfracombe are only a matter of minutes away. There is a swimming pool, sauna and gardens to enjoy and for the right type of people, opportunity to become ‘part of the welcoming furniture’ for other guests who come to stay and dine – or else to be as independent as they want. You could dabble in the garden or participate in the community of the Hotel if you want, to make the Place your ‘home’ yet without any of the responsibilities. Your accommodation bills would pay everything, including having someone to come and clean your room every day - a bit like living on a cruise liner! For the right person, this could be an enjoyable way to spend retirement savings or a pension, and an option that some may find preferable to moving into a Residential Home. It would also give you time to concentrate on the things you want to do – playing bridge, golf or other sports, entertaining friends, you name it.

The owners, Philip and Helen Milton, believe this is a wonderful opportunity for a few people to come and live at the Hotel, becoming part of the character of the Place. It is not a ‘retirement home’ and they don’t want it to be one but then, there are many people out there with independent means who may not want to cater for themselves anymore and are fed-up with the worries of home ownership and who would love the idea of becoming a ‘permanent resident’ in a lovely property yet if it doesn’t work for them, well, they just pay their Hotel bill and go – what could be easier? It could suit a couple or a single person alike and someone seeking quiet or a person who loves to engage with other people

So, how much does it cost and what are the terms? This is a big experiment for the owners too and they believe it is right to ensure that the Place fits for the residents who might want to come and live in the Hotel. It won’t be for everyone but for some it could be just the break they’ve been looking for and it’s not anything like as expensive as some might think and certainly not half as dear as the very high cost of going into the average Residential Home.

Why do the owners want to do it? Philip and Helen believe that some permanent guests will help the Hotel stay open all year (as the ongoing costs of running a Hotel do not stop just because it is quiet!), whilst also realising that this could be a perfect opportunity for the right person.
