Woolacombe Holiday Guide For Families

North Cornwall may be blessed with more than its fair share of treasures, but few can hold a candle to the wonders of Woolacombe. Consistently voted the UK’s number-one coastal holiday spot for families year after year, Woolacombe has a global reputation for delighting adults and kids of all ages. From the sprawling sands of the three-mile bay to the cosy cottages lining the streets, it’s a quintessential slice of historic Devon that’s simply unmissable.

Things to See and Do

Woolacombe is the kind of place you could easily while away a week or two doing nothing at all – simply soaking up the surroundings is entertainment enough. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of things to see and do in and around Woolacombe, so it’s more than worth considering at least a few of the following highlights:

  • Visit Mortehoe – Take a quick hop up the hill to the gorgeous village of Mortehoe for some amazing views of the coastline and a wonderful little maritime museum.
  • Borough Farm – The place to head with kids that like to get up-close and personal with a few friendly farm critters, Borough Farm never fails to receive rave reviews from its visitors.
  • Woolacombe Riding Stables – There’s something so uniquely magical about taking in the sights of the coastline and from horseback, so why not take the opportunity to do so while you’re in town?
  • Bicclescombe Park – Adventure playgrounds, tennis courts and all manner of wonderful treats await at Bicclescombe Park, just a few miles from the centre of town.
  • Saunton Sands – The largest dune system in the UK, Saunton Sands is a genuine one-of-a-kind and more than worth paying a visit to.

Woolacombe Bay

Thought we’d forgotten the biggest attraction of all? Far from it – Woolacombe Bay was recently named one of the best beaches in the world and so really deserves its own private section! Winner of countless awards and deservedly so, the three miles of sand beach Morte Point and Baggy Point really encapsulate what British family holidays are all about.

  • Soak Up the Sun - Woolacombe Bay is so huge and sprawling that even at its busiest times, you’ll still find a quiet spot to soak up the sun.
  • Safe Swimming – With lifeguards on duty all throughout the season and wonderfully gentle conditions, many spots across Woolacombe Bay are perfect for swimming.
  • Surf’s Up - Woolacombe Bay is an absolute magnet for surfers from all over Europe, offering ideal conditions for beginners and pros alike. The Nick Thorn Surf School is widely regarded as the very best the bay has to offer, which also offers a variety of rock-scrambling and jumping excursions for thrill-seeking visitors!
  • Sandy Stroll – You could walk for hours, even days on end up and down the Woolacombe coast and never, ever get bored of it. One top tip however is to try and time a cliff walk with the sunset…and by the way, don’t forget your camera!
  • Swing a Club – Of course it wouldn’t be a proper English seaside resort without an amazing pitch and put course… Woolacombe Bay doesn’t disappoint here, either!

Eating and Drinking

Dining opportunities come thick and fast in Woolacombe Bay – everything from fine dining to fabulous fish n’ chips. As far as word on the street goes, a few of the area’s finest haunts include:

  • Roxy's Diner at The Rocks Hotel – All-American food and shakes with a brilliant family-friendly atmosphere. Hardly an English tradition, but so much fun!
  • Barricane Beach Café – Probably the best views you’ll ever enjoy in your life while eating an amazing meal.
  • The Captains Table – Wonderful breakfasts and great seafood, fresh every day.
  • Hungry Jack – A gastropub that never disappoints.
  • Woolacombe Fryer – If you want the best fish ‘n chips in town, you’ll find them here!

Family Accommodation Options

As for where to stay, there are endless options perfectly suited-to and in some cases created solely for families. Along with an epic array of hotels and guest houses, there are also some spectacular camp sites and holiday parks. Perhaps the most popular of all are the Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks which offer various types of lodgings across several locations - Golden Coast, Woolacombe Bay, Easewell Farm & Twitchen House.

Kids and camping are an absolute match made in heaven, especially in a place like Woolacombe Bay with a world of activities and entertainment at your doorstep. In addition, the region’s best holiday parks and camp sites also tend to be uniquely cost-effective for families and larger groups alike, so why not make the best of the good weather and get reacquainted with the great outdoors?

With its three miles of gently shelving sands, Woolacombe on the North Coast of Devon, is used to winning awards for its cleanliness, water quality and facilities. A judge in a national competition said ‘A beach that is everyone’s ideal – golden and sandy – perfect for a traditional bucket and spade holiday.’ Woolacombe won the England for Excellence Gold Award for Family Resort of the Year 1999. In 2014 it has been voted the 2nd best beach in the UK and the 7th best beach in Europe.

Lifeguards ensure high standards of beach safety during the summer and surfers enjoy great waves in clean water. Surf gear and beach huts are available to hire.

The town has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with good pubs, restaurants shops, and plenty to do, including horse riding, the repertory theatre and a 9-hole golf course nearby. Some hotels have entertainment open to non-residents.

In winter the coast of North Devon takes on a more rugged beauty and the waves swell to challenge surfers.

The North Devon Link road (A361) from Junction 27 of the M5 brings the area within easy reach of the motorway network.
